The James Keating Memorial Mini Rugby festival was held on the 29th October Bank Holiday Monday at Kilballyowen Park.

This year we had a total of 15 teams who participated in the highly regarded Under 12 Mini Rugby festival. The Keating Cup Final was between Kanturk RFC and Newcastlewest RFC where a strong Kanturk team won out in the end on a score line of 6 – 2. The Keating Cup Final was refereed by John Lacey who did an excellent job on the day. The result meant that the Keating Cup headed away from Kilballyowen for the first time in five years.

The Kilballyowen Perpetual Shield was contested by Bruff Bears and Mallow RFC. The Shield final was a very entertaining game refereed by Andy Brace who gave both teams good advice and instruction though out the match. When the final whistle blew the Bruff Bears were victorious on a score line of 4 – 2 to the delight of the Bruff supporters.

The Impact Rugby Perpetual Shield was won on the day by Cashel RFC where the game was refereed by George Clancy.

A special word of thanks to all the helpers on the day, the Keating family & friends who looked after and provided hot food for each of the teams that participated. The Ladies Committee who as usual did an excellent job in running the tuck shop and the bar staff who kept everyone refreshed. Thanks also to the pitch co-ordinators and to those who looked after the car park and made it safe for all the festival patrons. Thanks also to the Civil Defence who provided medical assistance on the day when required.

A massive thanks to the Munster Association Referees (MAR) with their assistance, through the provision of five MAR referees being made available on the day. Additionally, we had three Elite International Referees present to referees the matches and the three finals, Andy Brace, John Lacey and Bruff’s very own George Clancy.

Without the referees the day wouldn’t have been the success that it was and the players wouldn’t have enjoyed the festival as much as they did. The coaches and players from all the teams that attended on the day couldn’t give enough praise to all the referees that officiated on the day.

All of the above contributed to a very successful 33rd James Keating Mini Ruby Memorial festival where memories are made.

On sat last we welcomed Ballina rfc in the 4th round of the ail, we were expecting a difficult afternoon from a team that were unbeaten in the league so far and they didn’t disappoint on that front, Bruff started the game with some excellent running rugby and with some fabulous display of handling and offloading Liam Treacy touched down in the corner to go 5-0 up. We continued to dominate and from a terrific maul from the line out saw Tom o Dwyer get the grounding, Kevin McManus add the convert and we were 12-0 in front Ballina pulled back a 3 pointer with a penalty in front of the post, they then got in for a try on the stroke of half time to make it 12-8.  The second half saw both teams giving it their all, with Ballina getting there nose in front with a try to go 13-12 in front, this semmed to ignite the Bruff boys and Liam Treacy added another try and with Kevin’s convert put us ahead 19-13 Ballina to there credit kept plugging away and were awarded with their 3rd try to make the score 19-18, with the clock going in to the last 10 Bruff finished the game with an excellent score from centre Jack o Grady, Kevin added the extras to give us a 5 pointer and deny Ballina a bonus point.

In what was an excellent team performance credit must also go to Ballina for adding to a hugley entertaing game.

Next up on Sat next in Kilballyowen is the vist of Seapoint who have proven to be very difficult opponents in the past, kick off 2.30 so come out and support the lads last Sat it was great to see such a good crowd it makes a huge difference to the players.
