Two games under lights at home last week for Bruff. The Competitive season kicked off last Wednesday night for Bruff 1st Xv with their first round home game V Thomond in the Limerick Charity Cup. A game that is always tight between the local rivals, Ten minutes in and Bruff were 12 points down, Fernando Gallant got the first Thomond try with Jeffrey Ryan adding the extras and Ger Finucane crossing the line for the second touchdown.

Welcome to Division 1b….

This seemed to give Bruff the kick-start they needed however, and they seemed to take things by the scruff of the neck to fight back with tries by Nigel Riordan and Garry Leonard, one converted by Brian Cahill who also slotted over a penalty while a Kevin O’ Mahony penalty for Thomond left the sides tied at 15 points apiece coming up to halftime.

A Brendan Deady try converted by Brian Cahill edged Bruff 22-15 in front at the break and while Brian Cahill and Kevin O’ Mahony traded second half penalties, some kinks and early season rustiness showed on both sides, with neither able to put any more points on the board, both defences taking charge until the end of the match. All in all a good start for the first team squad. I’m not sure whether the rolling substitutions trial used in this competition will be a popular feature with the men in the middle as there is bound to be a stage when more than fifteen players will end up on the pitch for one side or another.

The J1’s got their season up and running with a Friday night friendly against Locals Galbally coming out on the right side of a 27-15 win over their neighbours.

J2’s were up and running also at the weekend with a friendly against Newcastle West, eventually going down by 22 points to 26.
